A new piercing is an exciting little change — and a little aftercare helps it settle in beautifully.
Whether you just got a new lobe piercing, helix, conch, nostril, navel, or another placement, the key is to keep your routine simple, stay patient, and give your piercing the space it needs to heal.
At Jasel Jewelry, we want your piercing experience to feel easy from the studio to your everyday routine. This guide covers the basic steps that help keep a new piercing clean, comfortable, and on track while it heals.
Keep It Clean, Keep It Simple
The best aftercare routine is usually the simplest one.
Before touching your piercing or jewelry, always wash your hands thoroughly. During the healing period, try not to touch, turn, twist, or play with the jewelry unless you are cleaning around it.
For most new piercings, use a sterile saline wound wash with 0.9% sodium chloride. Spray the area gently, let it sit briefly, then allow it to air dry or gently pat dry with clean disposable gauze or a paper product.
You can also let clean water run over the area while showering. Just make sure shampoo, conditioner, body wash, or skincare products are rinsed away fully afterward.
Do Not Rotate Your Jewelry
You may have heard that new jewelry needs to be twisted or rotated while healing. It does not.
Moving the jewelry unnecessarily can irritate the piercing and slow down the healing process. Let your jewelry stay still and focus on cleaning the surrounding area instead.
Your jewelry was chosen to give your piercing the room it needs during the first stage of healing. Once swelling has settled, your piercer may recommend a downsizing appointment so the fit stays comfortable and polished.
Keep Products Away From the Area
When your piercing is healing, less is more.
Try to keep perfume, makeup, lotion, sunscreen, hair spray, dry shampoo, and skincare products away from the piercing area. Strong products such as alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, ointments, and harsh soaps are also best avoided, as they can dry or irritate the skin.
A gentle routine gives your body the best chance to do what it naturally knows how to do.
Be Mindful While Sleeping
For new ear piercings, pressure can be one of the biggest sources of irritation.
Try sleeping on the opposite side of your new piercing whenever possible. A travel pillow can also be helpful because it lets your ear rest in the middle opening instead of pressing directly against the pillow.
Keep your pillowcases fresh and clean while your piercing is healing. If you have long hair, loosely tie it back before bed so it does not pull on the jewelry overnight.
Showering, Swimming, and Everyday Plans
You can shower with a new piercing. Let clean water rinse the area, then make sure no soap, shampoo, or conditioner is left around the jewelry.
You can also continue with your normal daily life, including work, errands, and gentle workouts. Just be mindful of clothing, headphones, hats, bags, or anything that may rub, snag, or put pressure on the piercing.
During the early healing period, it is best to avoid soaking the piercing in pools, hot tubs, lakes, or the ocean when possible. If you do spend time in the water, rinse the area with clean water afterward and continue with your normal saline routine.
Do Not Change Your Jewelry Too Soon
Even when a piercing starts to look or feel better, it may still be healing beneath the surface.
Keep your initial jewelry in place until your piercer confirms that it is ready for a change. If the post begins to feel longer once initial swelling settles, come in for a downsizing appointment rather than switching jewelry at home.
Downsizing is a simple way to make your piercing feel more comfortable, reduce extra movement, and keep your ear stack looking clean.
Healing Is Not a Rush
Every piercing, placement, and person is different.
Some piercings settle in quickly, while others take more time and patience. Small changes throughout healing can be normal, especially as your body adjusts to the jewelry.
The best thing you can do is stay consistent with your aftercare, avoid over-cleaning, and let the healing process happen at its own pace. A piercing may look healed before it is fully healed inside, so continuing your routine matters.
Need Help With Your Healing?
Every piercing heals differently, and small changes during the healing process can happen.
If something about your piercing looks or feels different than expected, send Jasel a clear photo or stop by one of our locations. Our team can take a look, guide you on aftercare, check your jewelry fit, or let you know if a downsizing appointment may be helpful.
We are always happy to help you feel comfortable and confident throughout the healing process.
